This was the fourth year that this private venue has been used for the series with Team WORC putting in another great effort to further develop the course. The large rocks were still featured as were several bridges. Still the most technical course we have. As before parking and the event village were in the same field with terrific views over the Wicklow hills. Paul Joyce was back on the microphone providing the race commentary. This year there was an initiative to get all the club/team gazebos together beside the start/finish straight. Weather conditions were cool in the morning but dry and then turned to warm sunshine and blue skies in the afternoon. A wonderful day’s racing.

First to line up were the Under 6s who had a short loop around the timing tent, through the log chicane before climbing back up the slope to the finish line. The 10 young riders enjoyed the racing which only came to a halt when the parents looked tired. The riders got sweets, the parents didn’t.

The Under 8s course took them out of the event field, up the climb, back through the rocks and into the log chicane. They had 3 laps to complete. In the boys’ race Leo Belgrano (Un-Attached Leinster) took the win with Hugh Dolan (Ballinasloe Cycling Club) second and Ruben Manning third. Elisa Tyszecka (MBCC) dominated the girls’ race. Alice Bell (Shelbourne/Orchard CC) was second with Fiadh Bradley (Un-Attached Leinster) third.

The Under 10s had 4 laps of their course to compete over. Although the girls started 15 seconds behind the boys that didn’t put off Ríonach Campbell (Square Wheels) who charged past all the boys to finish over 30 seconds ahead of the whole pack. Second girl was Marian Mulvaney (Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club) with Olivia Wallace (EPIC MTB) completing the podium. First of the boys was Naoise Cunningham (Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club) with Killian Mccarthy (Un-Attached Munster) second and Éanna Dolan (Western Lakes CC) third.

The Under 12s race was another exciting affair held over 7 laps. At the front of the boys’ race was
Benjamin Cunningham (Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club) and Lewis Bell (Shelbourne/Orchard CC) who were sticking close to one another for the whole race, with Ben just finishing 2 seconds ahead of Lewis. Jaxon Jennings (Bear Cycling) was third with Josh Ruddell (Shelbourne/Orchard CC) fourth and Carlos Gonzalez Romero (Un-Attached Munster) finishing fifth. In the girls’ race Emilia Tyszecka (MBCC) lead for laps 1 to 3 but Pippa Ruddell (Shelbourne/Orchard CC) passed her and held onto the lead to the finish. Emilia was second with Sadhbh Moran third and Cliodhna Debarra (Comerach CC) fourth.

After the break for podium presentations and practice time the Under 14s, Under 16s, Senior 1 women, Senior 2 women, Senior 3 women and Senior 4 open riders lined up.

The Under 14s had a shorter course than the others and were the first to reappear at the finish line. Rían Watkins (Galway MTB) lead from start to finish over the 3 laps. Fabian Drwal (Lynx Cycling Club) was second with Billy Lord (Breffni Wheelers) third and Max McGrath (Fermoy Cycling Club) fourth. In the Under 14 girls’ race Georgie Wallace (EPIC MTB) finished ahead of Lara Burton.

The Under 16 boys had 3 laps of the full course to complete. Oscar Moran (EPIC MTB) finished well clear of second place Kieran Mulvaney (Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club) with James Geary (Fermoy Cycling Club) third and an underpower James Cunningham (Team WORC) in fourth. Ava Baker (Breffni Wheelers) was the only entry in the Under 16 girls category and completed her 2 laps.

Under 16 boys

The Senior 3 women had 2 laps of the full course to complete. Caroline Murphy (EPIC MTB) crossed the line first with Andrea Seaton (IMBRC) second, Aishling O’Connor (Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club) third and newcomer Tonia Lawlor fourth. The Senior 2 women had to do 3 laps. Fiona Lally (Team WORC) did lead at the end of lap 1 but Niamh Denny (EPIC MTB) took over the lead and held it to the finish. Fiona had to settle for second with Erica Grant (EPIC MTB) finishing third.

The Senior 1 women’s race was held over 4 laps and saw a great display of riding from Greta Lawless (Dawson Racing) to take the win. Current senior national champion Caoimhe May (Team WORC) was second with Joanna Bula (Team WORC) third and Leah McCarthy (K Capital Rocky Mountain) fourth.

Anthony Whelan (EPIC MTB) finished first in the Senior 4 race. Stephen Millist (Un-Attached Leinster) made his way up from fourth to second. Milos Hajek (IMBRC) was third with David Coyne fourth.

At 2 pm the Senior 1 open, Junior men, Senior 2 open and Senior 3 open riders lined up which meant we had 85 riders on track. The Senior 1 open riders and Junior men started on the first whistle.

Junior rider Ryan Daly (SCOTT Alpha Theta) was given permission to ride in the 5 lap Senior 1 race and he demonstrated why with a solid win. Course builder and overall off-road legend Robin Seymour (Team WORC) was second with Daniel Brickenden (Team WORC) third, Ruairi Byrne (UCD Cycling Club) fourth and Sean Feeney (Team WORC) fifth.

Fionn Crinion (IMBRC) won the 4 lap Junior men’s race. Conor Regan (Kilcullen Cycling Club Murphy Geospacial) was second with Darragh O’Keeffe (EPIC MTB) third and Alex Lonergan (Un-Attached Leinster) fourth.

In the Senior 2 open race Glyn O’Brien (Un-Attached Ulster) had a strong race on a course that suited his technical skills. Pj Hynes (Bellurgan Wheelers) was sitting in second place and was still ahead of John Doris (EPIC MTB) on the final home straight. PJ raced for the finish line but a chain issue had him jump off the bike within metres of the line. He started running but John managed to pass PJ to take second place. Bad luck PJ. It was good to see the return of Richard Felle (Team WORC) who finished fourth with Alfie Wallace (Un-Attached Leinster) fifth.

In the Senior 3 open race Fergal Kilkenny (Hush MTB) took an unexpected win for him. He thought he had no form going into the race but he had enough! Stephen Scrivener (EPIC MTB) was second with Jonny Adams (McConvey Cycles) third. Colm O’Byrne (IVCA Cycling Club) was fourth with Peter Davey (Un-Attached Ulster) fifth.

Thanks to all the hardworking volunteers from Team WORC for hosting the event. Thanks to Jim the landowner for the use of the field and forest. Thanks to this year’s prize sponsor Cycleology / Cup and Cone. The next round will be held in Ballinastoe on Sunday 10 May. This will be part of the Wicklow Mountain Bike Festival. Note that the race schedule starts 1 hour earlier to accommodate the downhill race which will be happening in the afternoon.

Commissaire: Martin Grimley

Results – here

Race report by Martin Grimley

Photos
Eamon Bracken (Facebook) – 12 pm race, 2 pm race

The 2026 Irish Cross-country Mountain Bike National Point Series opened with Round 1 at Tonygarrow in County Wicklow on Sunday 19 April.
